Most virtual meetings don’t fall flat because the content is weak. They fall flat because the connection never really lands.In virtual meetings, the purpose and value can often get lost through weak technology, screen shares and people talking at each other. But that’s not the worst thing. People make rapid judgements based on two unconscious questions: Can I trust you? Are you credible?
Before you even say a word. No pressure! On video, those judgements are shaped by your voice, facial expressions, posture and structure — long before anyone evaluates the substance of what you’re saying. Confidence in virtual meetings isn’t about being louder or more dominant. It’s about clarity, intention and calm authority. Before the meeting Can you clearly articulate why this meeting matters and what you want people to leave knowing, thinking or doing? Is the agenda designed for decisions and discussion, not just updates? Is your camera at eye level, with good lighting and minimal distractions? Your background matters!
During the meeting Are you speaking slightly slower than normal, with purposeful pauses? Is your voice calm and varied, or drifting into “monotone update mode”? Are you looking into the camera when making key points (that’s eye contact online)? Are you visibly engaged when others are speaking? We know if you are reading or typing an email!
To keep people engaged Have you invited contribution early, rather than waiting until the end? Are you managing airtime so the same voices don’t dominate? Are you actively checking understanding and alignment, not just assuming it?
Virtual meetings aren’t a second-best version of “real” meetings.
