As we embrace the festive season of multiple drinking events and questionable jumpers, something interesting happens…the external world slows down but the internal noise gets louder.This is the time of year when people are encouraged to reflect on 2025 and make their plan for 2026. With that reflection, the old stories start whispering again: “Did I achieve enough this year?”
“I should be further ahead by now.”
“I’ve been so busy I’ll do more BD next year.”
“I’ll work on my ‘soft skills’ next year… maybe.” And for the introverts among us, this is the season of the annual “vulnerability hangover”. That post-festivity spiral where you replay every interaction and wonder whether you were interesting enough, fun enough, competent enough… These stories are not facts. They’re just well-rehearsed lines you’ve accidentally memorised, like the lyrics to a Christmas song you’ve never actually liked. (forgive me, Mr Bublè, I love them all!) This holiday season, I want you to give yourself a different gift:
the permission to rewrite the script. Here’s a technique I teach (and use myself):
Catch — Challenge — Replace
1. Catch the story.
2. Challenge the accuracy.
3. Replace it with something that actually supports your growth. Try it. Whats one story you keep telling yourself? Is it really true? (Brutal honesty here please!) What would be the more useful version of that story?
