Both men and women experience imposter syndrome at some point (and often at many points) in their careers.

The term itself is misleading. Coined in 1978 by two psychologists studying high-achieving women, it described professionals who, despite clear evidence of their success, ‘felt like frauds’. The label makes it sound like a flaw, a weakness or worse, proof you are out of your depth. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Let’s discuss:

• It’s not a flaw. Doubt shows you care about doing things well. And you should!

• It’s not fraud. If you were faking it, you wouldn’t be worried about the feeling of being an imposter.

• It’s a knowledge gap. You’re stepping into new territory and that discomfort is growth. Embrace it - it got you this far.

So instead of calling it Imposter Syndrome, let’s call it Confident Humility.

You’re confident in what you already know (which you once had to learn), and humble enough to recognise the gaps when facing a new firm, a new case, a new client, a new jurisdiction, or a new area of law.

Sounds too simple?! What if it could be?

Here’s the irony: the less competent professionals rarely suffer from imposter syndrome.

Feeling like an imposter is actually a sign that you’re self-aware and holding yourself to a high standard. In other words, it’s usually the capable, conscientious professionals who get it.

So go do what only you can do - brilliantly, imperfectly, boldly.
