Hope is not a strategy. But it's a pretty good starting point.There are certain phrases that get repeated so often they start to lose their meaning. "Stay positive." "Everything happens for a reason." Most of us nod politely when we hear them but the meaning often fails to land. Because when you're facing a difficult client, a struggling team, a demanding partner, or simply having one of those weeks where absolutely nothing seems to be going your way, positivity can feel like a bit of a stretch. But hope is different. Hope isn't pretending everything is fine. Hope isn't blind optimism. Hope isn't sitting on your sofa waiting for the universe to sort itself out. Apparently!? Hope is the decision to believe that tomorrow doesn't have to look exactly like today. What a lovely thought! Why Hope Matters The people who cope best with setbacks aren't necessarily the most resilient. They're the people who believe there is still a path forward. Not because they know what that path looks like. But because they trust one exists. Without hope, we stop trying. We stop applying for opportunities. We stop investing in relationships. We stop putting our hand up. We convince ourselves nothing will change anyway. And once that happens, the outcome we're worried about often becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. The Science Bit Psychologists have spent years studying hope and what they discovered is interesting. Honestly! People with higher levels of hope experience lower levels of stress and anxiety, recover more quickly from challenges, and are generally able to pivot when things don't go according to plan. According to researcher, Dr Tasha Eurich, hope has two parts: the belief that you can find pathways toward your goals, and the motivation to pursue them. When people’s three fundamental psychological needs - confidence, choice, connection - were met, they reported higher levels of hope. In other words, when we feel competent, autonomous, and supported, hope is more likely to flourish. It's a practical psychological resource that helps people navigate uncertainty, solve problems and keep moving when others give up. One of the challenges for lawyers is that you're trained to spot risk. It's literally your job. You spend your days identifying what could go wrong, where the weaknesses are, and what the worst-case scenario might be. It's a valuable skill but not always a helpful one. A Question For This Week If you're feeling stuck, overwhelmed, frustrated or simply a bit flat, please ask yourself one simple question: What's one small thing I can do today that my future self will thank me for?
