I was listening to an interview with Bryan Cranston recently, and something he said stuck with me.He talked about how acting school teaches you how to act but no one teaches you how to be a celebrity. How to handle the pressure, the visibility, the expectations, the identity shift. And it occurred to me that this isn’t just an acting problem. It’s a professional one. Because in law (and in most high-performing environments), we do the same thing. You go to law school and learn the law.
But no one teaches you how to be a lawyer. You get promoted.
But no one teaches you how to lead a team, manage upwards, or navigate the politics that come with it. You start building a business.
But no one teaches you how to handle clients, grow relationships, or deal with the pressure of responsibility. And so many capable, intelligent professionals find themselves thinking: “Why does this feel harder than it should?” The answer is simple but not always obvious: Because you’re being asked to operate at a level you were never trained for. Success isn’t just about skill, it’s about mindset and adaptability. High performers don’t struggle because they lack ability. They struggle because the rules of the game have changed and no one handed them the new playbook. So what actually helps? It’s not more technical knowledge.
You already have that. It’s learning how to: Manage your own thinking under pressure Build confidence in unfamiliar situations Communicate with clarity and authority Lead people, not just tasks Stay aligned with who you are, even as expectations grow
At each new level, the challenge isn’t “Can you do the work?”
