You can’t move these days for hearing words like “values” and “alignment.” Every podcast, leadership talk and LinkedIn post seems to mention them somewhere.And I know what you’re thinking. You barely have time to get through your inbox, never mind sit cross-legged reflecting on your purpose. But stay with me here. For those who know me, core values are something I talk about a lot because they sit at the centre of who you are, how you operate and why certain environments, people and decisions either energise you or completely drain you. This work is front-loaded. Once you understand your core values, everything else becomes clearer: how you lead, how you communicate, what motivates you, what frustrates you, where you thrive and where you don’t. It’s less “fluffy self-development exercise.” More internal operating manual. I recently heard someone describe it this way: “Values are not something you aspire to or put on a company vision board. Values are how you operate when you operate at your natural best.” And honestly? I think that’s one of the clearest explanations of values I’ve heard in a long time. Because somewhere along the way, “values” became a corporate exercise.

A list of words nobody can remember by Monday morning (admit it!) Real values show up in the moments that matter. They show up in: how you behave under pressure; how you treat people when nobody is watching; how you lead when things go wrong; how you communicate when you’re tired, stressed or stretched; and how you consistently operate when you are at your absolute best.
When you are your true self, there is almost always a pattern. Some people naturally create calm in chaos.
Some instinctively build trust.
Some challenge thinking.
Some make people feel safe enough to speak honestly.
Some quietly raise standards without ego attached to it. Those patterns matter. Because values are not aspirational personality traits. They are behavioural clues. And the problem in many professional environments is that people often spend years trying to become what they think they should be, instead of understanding who they already are when they operate at their best. The irony is that the more disconnected people become from their own values, the more disengaged, exhausted and reactive they often feel. Values give people a compass. They help people: make better decisions; communicate more effectively; build stronger relationships; lead more authentically; manage pressure more intelligently; and ultimately perform more consistently.
And for firms, this matters. Because the next generation of lawyers are not simply asking:
“What do I have to do?” They’re asking:
“Why does this matter?” Whether we like it or not, values now sit at the centre of leadership, retention, culture and performance. The best professionals I’ve worked with over the years — both in the London market and in global law firms — tend to share one thing in common: They know who they are.
They know what matters to them.
And they operate from that place…consistently. When you are in a flow state and you feel you can do no wrong, you’ll find theres a consistent pattern of behaviours that show up every single time. My job is to help you identify them. You’re doing great!
