In The Bourne Identity, if we look past the non-stop action (which we love!), it’s about discovering who you are when you realise you’re capable of more than you’ve been trained for. In many ways, the early years of a legal career feel surprisingly similar. Roll with me here… Law school teaches you the law. Your firm, your clients, and the mistakes you will inevitably make, teaches you how to practise it. (Think learning to drive to pass a test vs learning to drive once you have a licence). But neither really teaches you how to be a lawyer. How to develop presence, confidence, judgment, influence, and a professional identity that feels like it actually belongs to you. If you’re reading this and thinking, I’m doing well, I’m learning fast, and I’m keeping up, that’s a good place to be. It means you’ve mastered the technical foundation. What comes next is something different. The Part No One Told YouSome lawyers stand out very early in their careers, not because they know more law, but because people trust them more quickly, listen to them more closely, and remember them more clearly. That usually comes down to things like: How they handle pressure and difficult conversations. How they show up in rooms where they’re not the most senior person. How they build professional relationships, not just professional competence. How they play to their natural strengths instead of trying to copy someone else’s style.
These aren’t things you’re “born with.” They’re things you learn. Embrace Your StrengthsIt’s easy to believe there’s a “right” way to sound, act, and lead. But the lawyers who build the most satisfying and sustainable careers rarely do it by becoming a carbon copy of someone else. They do it by understanding what they’re naturally good at and how their personality affects clients, colleagues and their overall self-esteem. Your job isn’t to become a different kind of person. It’s to become a more aware and intentional version of yourself. Thinking Beyond the BillablesMost lawyers only start thinking about influence, leadership, and professional identity much later in their careers. The ones who quietly thrive tend to think about it much earlier. Not in a grand, five-year-plan way, but in small, practical questions like: What do I want to be known for here? What do people trust me with and why? What kind of lawyer do I want to be, not just what kind of work do I want to do?
A Different Kind of ConfidenceYou don’t need to have everything figured out or know exactly where your career is going. Which is lucky, as you probably don’t! What helps is knowing (and accepting) that: What you don’t yet know, you can learn. What you don’t yet feel confident in, you can practise. What makes you different can become what makes you valuable.
That’s how professional identity is built. Not all at once but choice by choice. Because what makes you so interesting is not what you do, but who you become while you’re doing it.
