Think about the last time you watched a TED Talk. Maybe it was a scientist explaining the universe in simple, elegant language. Or a leader telling a personal story that made you rethink your own. Chances are, you weren’t just listening, you were leaning in.To be an effective lawyer, you need to be able to convince others to see things the way you see them. A great way to do this is by crafting a stellar narrative. And that requires good storytelling skills. But there isn’t a single class on storytelling in law school. It’s up to the lawyers themselves to supplement their law school training with skills that allow them to captivate an audience and create trust and connection with their clients. TED Talks have become a global phenomenon not because the speakers have the slickest slides or the fanciest stages, but because they connect. They take complex ideas and make them human, engaging, and memorable. That’s the power of an excellent presentation. Over the course of my career, I have attended countless talks across a wide range of firms. Interestingly, the topics themselves rarely change. Even now, I see clients presenting on subjects I first heard discussed more than twenty years ago. Your topic isn’t unique but you are. Your stories and experience within that topic make the way you present on it yours alone. Don’t be generic! In reality, many people in the room will already know something about the subject before they even walk in. Some may be there out of obligation rather than choice, with a long list of competing priorities on their mind. They may already be thinking about the emails waiting for them or the fires they need to put out as soon as they leave the room. The moment you begin a presentation, your audience’s attention is at its sharpest, but it won’t stay that way for long. Studies show that our brains are designed to tune out when information feels abstract or we feel we can fill in the narrative without paying too much attention. Don’t start with introductions or a description of the topic. Your audience already knows who you are, or they can easily look you up afterwards. They also know the topic, because it’s the reason they came. Instead, begin with the first line of a story. Yep, straight in… When you start with a story, the audience cannot predict where you’re going. Their brains cannot fill in the narrative, so they pay attention. Stories activate multiple parts of the brain at once: language, senses and emotions. In other words, we do not just listen to stories, we experience them. A good story immediately pulls the audience into a narrative. Instead of passively receiving information, people begin relating what they hear to their own experiences. This engagement is what keeps them listening. A well-chosen story builds curiosity. It’s not about embellishment. It’s about clarity, structure and emotional intelligence. People may forget the facts. But they remember the emotions. So start with a story! Facts inform.
