The Summer holidays are over. Diaries are filling up. New work is coming in. Teams are back together. Before long, we'll all be wondering where October went.January always feels like the obvious time for a fresh start, but I'm not convinced it actually is. It's cold, grey, and many of us are still recovering from the craziness of Christmas and New Year. For me, September has always felt like a real beginning. The ‘back to school’ era where the pace changes, routines return, and there's a quiet sense of possibility in the air. With the once added bonus of new stationary! If you're going to embrace a fresh perspective, September seems like the perfect time to do it. So how can we navigate this new quarter with a little more control and ease? You probably don't need a completely new system, a new notebook or a colour-coded planner. But there is absolutely no judgement from me either way! You simply need a few small resets. Here are seven tips I'd recommend spending fifteen minutes on this week. 1. Decide Your One Thing Forget ten goals. Ask yourself one question: "If I could only improve one thing between now and Christmas, what would make the biggest difference?" Maybe it's building your client network. Maybe it's delegating more effectively. Maybe it's leaving work on time once a week.
One clear priority almost always beats ten competing ones. 2. Book Three Coffees Business development isn't about constantly meeting new people. More often than not, it's about looking after the relationships you already have. 3. Block Thinking Time Before Someone Else Books It The most successful people don't just protect meeting time, they protect thinking time. Even thirty uninterrupted minutes each week to reflect, plan or simply think can completely change how you approach the days that follow. If it's not in your diary, someone else's priorities will take its place. 4. Finish the Thing You've Been Carrying Since June You know the one. We all carry the baggage that quietly drains mental energy. 5. Write Down Three Wins Most professionals are brilliant at spotting what still needs improving. They're often much less comfortable recognising what's already gone well. Before rushing into the final quarter of the year, spend a few minutes writing down three things you're genuinely proud of. Whether the wins are big or small, progress deserves to be noticed. 6. Introduce Two People One of the best ways to network is to help someone else's. A thoughtful introduction takes only a few minutes, creates goodwill, and often leads to opportunities you could never have predicted. Generosity has a remarkable way of finding its way back. Pay it forward! 7. Ask Yourself One Final Question What do I want people to think of me by Christmas? How will clients and colleagues describe working with you? Does the answer to that question tell you exactly where you should be spending your energy? September is our chance to be intentional before the pace inevitably picks up again.
