It’s Not You, It’s Me!

The lawyer–client relationship often starts like professional dating.

Creepy but fair.

There’s an introduction, first email or LinkedIn connection.
A first meeting.
A polite exchange of credentials and people you might know.
And beneath it all, a very human question:

“Do I like and trust this person?”

Everyone is on their best behaviour.
Everyone is listening carefully.
And everyone is deciding (often subconsciously) whether this feels right or something feels off. We’ve all been there!

When the coffee/ lunch/ dinner/ drink is over, clients aren’t asking:

• Is this lawyer smart? Do they know the law? Are they the best lawyer to handle my work?

They’re asking:

• Did I feel heard? Did I feel understood, or managed?

And the least technical question of all:

“Would I want a second coffee/ lunch/ dinner/ drink with this person?”

Trust is built in those early moments. In a profession full of highly capable lawyers, that is often the differentiator.

And just like dating, people rarely say exactly what they’re feeling.

Clients are no different.

They don’t announce:

• “I’m confused and worried to report this matter internally.”

• “I’m worried about cost.”

• “I don’t feel fully confident in this advice.”

Instead, trust wobbles quietly.

Shorter emails. Delayed responses. Less engagement. A subtle shift in tone. Fewer new instructions. No new instructions. Let the ghosting begin…

Emotionally intelligent lawyers notice these signals early. Not because they’re mind readers, but because they’re paying attention.

They ask better questions. They slow conversations down. They create space for honesty.

And just like in dating, when someone feels safe enough to be truthful, trust deepens fast.

The most commercially successful lawyers understand this.

They don’t take the trust for granted. They treat it as a strategic advantage. Because when clients trust you, they don’t just stay, they advocate.

And that’s when professional dating turns into a relationship that lasts.

Hopefully less creepy now.
