If You Don’t Draw the Line, You Can’t Be Shocked When It’s Crossed!

(Well, you can be, but I suppose that’s a different conversation?!)

Let’s talk about a word that makes many lawyers instinctively roll their eyes or furrow their brows: boundaries.

I know—just the idea can feel uncomfortable. Lawyers are trained to be available, responsible, reliable, responsive, and on it before anyone else even realises something needs doing.

The profession rewards it.

Clients expect it.

Partners admire it.

So when someone says, “Set boundaries,” most lawyers quietly think:

“Yes, that sounds lovely… for people in other industries.”

We get it. Some of you will never put on an 'out of office' message. We understand the fear that if you're not always available, another lawyer will be—and you'll lose out.

And for the more seasoned lawyers, we get that this is simply how you were trained. That mindset runs deep.

Boundaries aren’t selfish—they’re survival. A long term investment and 100% contextual.

But here’s the truth we don’t talk about enough:

Burnout rarely arrives as a dramatic collapse. It sneaks in through tiny, everyday moments where our core values and set boundaries quietly disappear.

The good news? Preventing burnout doesn’t require a radical lifestyle overhaul. It starts with something far smaller—baby steps.

One baby step for this week:

When someone asks for something “ASAP”, try responding with:

“Happy to help. To make sure I prioritise correctly, when exactly do you need this?”

That’s it.
No confrontation.
No “no.”
No hard line in the sand.
Just context.
Just clarity.
Just a moment where you take back a tiny piece of control.

Most lawyers are surprised by how often the “urgent” thing… isn’t.

Why this matters:

• That one clarification builds the muscle you need for bigger boundaries later.

• It reduces unnecessary stress.

• It creates more realistic expectations.

• And it’s one of the simplest ways to protect your time without ever feeling like you’re letting anyone down.

If setting boundaries feels uncomfortable, good news—you’re not doing it wrong. You’re just human. And you’re learning a skill that will protect your energy, your career longevity, and your sanity.

Be mindful:

• What works for someone else might not work for you.

• What one client respects, another might push back on.

• Boundaries MUST have consequences - otherwise that was a pointless conversation.

• 99% of people get defensive or feel rejected when someone sets a boundary. So be self-aware - it should not be about wanting that person to change.
